Dicyandiamide, commonly shortened to DICY or DCD, is an organic chemical with the molecular formula C₂H₄N₄. It is a dimer of cyanamide and a cyano-substituted derivative of guanidine. Presented as a white crystalline powder, it dissolves in water, alcohols, ethylene glycol and dimethylformamide, yet is nearly insoluble in ether and benzene. The substance maintains stable properties under dry conditions.

Precursor for Guanidine Salts and CyanamideDicyandiamide reacts with acids to generate multiple guanidine salts. Its reaction with benzonitrile yields cyanamide, a vital intermediate for manufacturing coatings, laminated materials and molding powders.
Dye-Fixing AgentResins synthesized from dicyandiamide and formaldehyde function as effective dye fixatives.
Fertilizer AdditiveDicyandiamide and its compound fertilizers inhibit nitrifying bacterial activity, regulate the nitrogen conversion rate in soil, minimize nitrogen loss, and improve nitrogen fertilizer utilization efficiency.
Fine-Chemical IntermediateIn pharmaceutical production, it is employed to synthesize guanidine nitrate, sulfonamide medicines and thiourea. It also serves as nitrocellulose stabilizers, rubber vulcanization accelerators, steel surface hardeners, artificial leather fillers and adhesives. Moreover, its reaction with formic acid produces 5-azacytosine, a key pharmaceutical intermediate.
