Key functions include:
1. Promoting rooting in cuttings (primary application)
Rooting effect: Stimulates the formation of numerous adventitious roots at the base of cuttings, significantly increasing survival rates.
Site of action: Limited translocation within the plant; tends to remain near the application site, resulting in a strong localized rooting effect.
Suitable plants: Herbaceous and woody ornamental plants, fruit trees, forest trees, flowers, etc.
Rooting characteristics: Produces numerous long, slender adventitious roots.
2. Promoting cell division and growth
Roots: Stimulates taproot growth and induces root primordia formation; results in abundant, straight, thick roots with extensive root hairs.
Young shoots: Promotes cell division and accelerates new shoot sprouting.
Fruit: Promotes fruit set and increases the fruit-setting rate.
3. Breaking seed dormancy and increasing germination rates
Breaking dormancy: Effective for seeds with long dormancy periods, such as potato tubers, rice, and wheat.

4. Increasing crop fruit-setting rates

1. Soaking method (slow soaking)
(1) Concentration: 50–300 ppm; treatment time: 6–24 hours; applied to cuttings of woody plants that are difficult to root. (2) Concentration: 100–500 ppm; treatment time: 12–24 hours; application: cuttings of general herbaceous plants.
2. Quick-dip method
(1) Concentration: 500–1000 ppm; treatment time: 5–8 seconds. Application: cuttings of herbaceous plants that root easily.
3. Powder method
(1) Concentration: 0.001%–0.0001%; application method: dip the base of the cutting into the powder before planting.
4. Recommendations for combined use
(1) IBA + NAA: IBA promotes the growth of numerous fine roots, while NAA promotes fewer, thicker roots; combining them results in a more robust root system.
(2) IBA + Indole-butyric-naphthalene-acetic acid (IBA + NAA/IBA-NAA complex): A common formula for horticultural rooting powders; yields more significant results.
(3) IBA + Compound fertilizer: Used as a synergist during fertigation (drenching or drip irrigation).
Plant growth regulators have a dual nature: low concentrations promote growth, whereas high concentrations may inhibit or even kill the plant. They must be used strictly in accordance with the instructions regarding the specific crop, timing, concentration, and application method.
