Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, more commonly called triflic acid (abbreviated TFMS, TFSA, HOTf or TfOH), is an extremely strong sulfonic acid with the chemical formula CF₃SO₃H. Regarded as one of the most powerful acids available, it falls under the category of superacids.
Triflic acid finds extensive use in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and polymers. Its anhydrous form is especially vital for fine chemical synthesis, owing to exceptional stability and resistance to oxidation and reduction reactions.
Coupled with its non-oxidizing character, these attributes make triflic acid highly valuable across numerous chemical processes. Within pharmaceutical manufacturing, it is essential for producing a range of drug types such as nucleosides, antibiotics, steroids, proteins and glycosides.
While triflic acid itself has broad industrial applications, its derivative triflic anhydride readily hydrolyzes upon contact with water and carries significant toxic hazards, restricting its use in certain operational environments.
