Molecular sieves are aluminosilicate materials with a cubic crystalline framework. Their structure is mainly built from silicon and aluminum atoms linked via oxygen bridges, forming an open three-dimensional network. This network consists of many evenly sized channels and neatly arranged cavities, which create a large internal surface area. The framework also holds loosely bound low-valence, large-radius metal cations, as well as chemically adsorbed water molecules.
When heated, the adsorbed water is eliminated while the crystal structure remains intact, leaving regular cavities interconnected by micropores of uniform diameter. These micropores selectively capture small-sized molecules that can pass through, while blocking larger ones. This enables molecular sieves to separate substances according to molecular size, shape, polarity, boiling point or saturation properties.
Thanks to this distinctive molecular-sieving capability, they are extensively employed across chemical, electronic, petrochemical and natural gas industries for drying, purification and separation purposes.
