Dimethyl sulfoxide is an organosulfur compound first synthesized in 1866 by Alexander Zaytsev in the Russian Empire. This colorless liquid is an important polar aprotic solvent, capable of dissolving both polar and nonpolar substances. It is miscible with a variety of organic solvents and with water.

Product Application
DMSO is a polar aprotic solvent used in chemical reactions, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), and as a cryoprotectant for vitrification in the preservation of cells, tissues, and organs. It helps prevent mechanical damage to cells caused by ice crystal formation during freezing. DMSO is commonly employed in the storage of primary, subcultured, and recombinant heteroploid and hybridoma cell lines, as well as embryonic stem cells (ESC) and hematopoietic stem cells. In these applications, it is often combined with BSA or fetal bovine serum (FBS).
